New Delhi: In a landmark move to reinforce its presence in the global two-wheeler industry, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has announced an investment of ₹920 crore to establish the world’s largest Honda two-wheeler manufacturing facility. The new expansion will make India Honda’s largest production hub globally, overtaking its existing plants in countries like Indonesia and Thailand.
The investment will be channeled into scaling up operations at Honda’s Narsapura plant in Karnataka, with the goal of significantly boosting both domestic supply and global exports. This step is part of Honda’s broader strategy to strengthen its manufacturing base in India and tap into rising demand across emerging markets.
Focus on Growth and Exports
India, the world’s largest two-wheeler market, continues to be a high-growth region for Honda. With strong domestic demand and rising export potential to markets in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, the company aims to leverage India’s manufacturing capabilities to meet global supply requirements.
The expansion will not only increase production of internal combustion engine (ICE) models but also pave the way for manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs). Honda has already indicated its plans to launch electric two-wheelers in India and other emerging markets, with the Indian plant playing a central role in this shift.
Boost to Employment and Local Industry
The increased manufacturing activity is expected to generate employment opportunities and promote local sourcing of components. This development also supports the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ and self-reliant India (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) initiatives, strengthening India’s position as a preferred destination for global manufacturing.
Strategic Move in Global Automotive Landscape
With global manufacturers looking to diversify their production bases, India’s stable ecosystem, skilled workforce, and policy support are making it an attractive option. Honda’s decision is a testament to this trend and highlights the country’s readiness to lead in next-generation automotive manufacturing.
The company’s strategic bet on India is expected to position it as a central player in global two-wheeler innovation, technology, and supply chain efficiency.
