India Achieves 51.5 GW Wind Energy Capacity, Marks 150% Growth Over a Decade

| June 19, 2025

India’s renewable energy journey has hit a major milestone with the country reaching an installed wind energy capacity of 51.5 gigawatts (GW) as of 2025. This marks an impressive 150% growth in wind power capacity over the past decade, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to sustainable and clean energy.

The expansion has been driven by strategic policy support, private sector participation, and increasing global investment in India’s green economy. From just over 20 GW in 2014, the sector has rapidly scaled up, placing India as the third-largest wind energy producer in the world, after China and the United States.

A major chunk of this capacity has been installed in wind-rich states like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Rajasthan. These states have developed advanced infrastructure and regulatory mechanisms to encourage wind farm installations and facilitate power evacuation.

This milestone aligns with India’s broader climate goals under the Paris Agreement and its pledge to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Wind energy plays a vital role in India’s renewable energy mix, supporting grid stability and reducing dependence on coal-based power generation.

The growth in wind energy has also translated into economic benefits such as job creation in manufacturing, logistics, project development, and maintenance. With further advancements in offshore wind technologies and hybrid renewable projects (wind-solar), the sector is poised for even stronger expansion in the coming years.

India’s achievement of 51.5 GW in wind power underscores not just capacity building, but also the nation’s increasing global relevance in the clean energy transition
